Tax services

The work I take on

Individuals, businesses, estates, trusts, foreign-account reports, and IRS problems. Law enforcement has been part of the practice since 1992. It is not the only work I do.

Individuals

Individual income tax

I have prepared over 10,000 individual income tax returns. That is a count of returns, and it covers most areas of individual income tax, from a straightforward wage return to a filing with more moving parts.

If prior-year returns are still open, I can prepare them as far back as the record requires.

Law enforcement

Beginning in 1992, while I was working for Murray E. Taylor, CPA, I began preparing tax returns for law enforcement communities and building those relationships. Officers often have reporting questions that a standard wage return does not raise.

During the last 33 years I have prepared returns for many thousands of officers. They include people in the Houston and Baytown area, the Austin area, and other locations. You will always deal directly with me.

Law enforcement is a long part of this practice. Families, businesses, and other individual clients are part of it too.

Businesses

Corporate and partnership returns

Forms 1120, 1120-S, and 1065 come with strict rules on due dates, reporting accuracy, and disclosures. I prepare those returns for corporations, partnerships, and LLCs.

If something is wrong with the way an LLC is set up or operating, bring it. We can work through what needs to be fixed.

State franchise reports

A state franchise tax is a privilege tax on taxable entities, mainly corporations and LLCs, formed in Texas or doing business in Texas. I prepare Texas franchise reports and franchise reports for other states, including electronic filing where the state accepts it.

Beneficial ownership information reports

Beneficial ownership information reporting is a service you can ask me about for your entity. Tell me how the entity is set up and we will discuss whether a report belongs in the work.

Estates, trusts, and foreign accounts

Foreign bank account reports

A United States person with a financial interest in, or signature authority over, foreign financial accounts may need to file an FBAR. Ask me if that report belongs with your return.

When the IRS writes

IRS representation

Call me about an examination, a collection action, unfiled or prior-year returns, or another issue before the IRS.

I have represented individuals and businesses on a wide variety of issues with the Internal Revenue Service, the Social Security Administration, and state revenue departments. My view is that no question should go unasked, and that we can often find the reason a notice arrived.

About Us

How this practice works

My name is James “Troy” Greer. I am originally from Houston. Beginning in 2003 I made my home in the Austin area, and beginning in 2020 I have lived in the greater Texarkana area. In 1993 I graduated with a B.S. in accounting from the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

I worked eight years at Murray E. Taylor, CPA, then opened my own tax practice. For the next 20 years that office was at 11811 East Freeway in Houston. That Houston address is the old office. Beginning in 2022 I have worked remotely from my home office in the greater Texarkana area. Clients are spread across Texas, and beyond.

I am licensed by the Internal Revenue Service as an Enrolled Agent. To keep that license I complete continuing education on tax rules, ethical conduct, and data security. I have prepared tax returns for thousands of clients over the last 33+ years. The goal is a reliable and accurate service for a fair price.

The office would not run without Amy Greer, my partner, friend, and wife. She helps the office operate. Your return is still prepared by me.

Remote, with a mailing box

I meet clients by telephone. The Ashdown box is where mail goes. Appointments are not held there. I am available Monday through Saturday.
